Meet Wyatt: Program Coordinator at The Ecology School

What is your role and what is a typical day in your life at work?

My role as Program Coordinator and a member of our Learning Experiences team is to work closely with our Ecology Educators and clients and operate the day-to-day overnight programming at The Ecology School. A typical day starts with preparing for weekly meetings and having participants on site. I help facilitate meals in the dining commons and may act or sing in the mealtime entertainment as a part of our food systems education. When educators and students are out on lessons, I may be out observing and providing feedback, preparing merchandise orders, or responding to emails. A great deal of my role is to ensure participants feel comfortable and welcome on campus and to support educators in having the tools they need create an engaging and exciting learning experience.

What aspect of your job brings you the most joy?

There are many little moments that bring me joy in this job. I'm thankful I get to be able to immerse myself in the natural beauty of River Bend Farm and share this space with participants during their experiences. Playing even just a small part of participants' learning of food systems, discovery of ecological connections, and reflection of oneself through conversation always brings me joy and constantly reminds me that our work matters and is impactful to all people.

What is the biggest thing you have learned from being in your role?

I've been consistently learning and growing throughout my time and various roles at The Ecology School. I've realized that the power of wonder, joy, and being present can have a multitude of benefits not only for myself but for others as well. It can make the rainy days feel a bit brighter and bring a community closer together. My job asks a great deal from me and finding the wonder and joy reminds me to slow down and connect with the natural world throughout the seasons and in turn helps me inspire staff and participants to find those ideas in their day-to-day lives.
